Cheng Yaojin was born in 589 AD, contemporary with the Sui Dynasty. He was a native of Dong'e, Jizhou, originally named Cheng Yaojin, a simple name indicating his parents' expectation for him to achieve something great in his life. Later, he changed his name to Cheng Zhijie.

During the late Sui Dynasty, when the world was in chaos, Cheng Yaojin organized a troop to defend his hometown at the age of over 20, and joined Li Mi's Wagang army. In one battle, he picked up the wounded general Pei Xingyan, escaped back to the camp on one horse, and was stabbed by the pursuing soldiers. He turned around, broke the spear pole, and killed the pursuing soldiers to escape danger. Later, he and Qin Qiong left Wang Shichong and joined the army of Qin Wang Li Shimin.

Under Li Shimin, Cheng Yaojin began a new military career. He participated in many battles, such as breaking Song Jingang, capturing Dou Jiande, and surrendering Wang Shichong. He often held the flag and charged ahead, repeatedly establishing military achievements. Facing the challenge of Crown Prince Li Jiancheng, he repeatedly reminded Li Shimin to quickly protect himself. He also participated in the Xuanwumen Coup, supported Li Shimin to ascend the throne, and was promoted to General of the Right Martial Guards for his contributions.

In 665 AD, Cheng Yaojin died in Chang'an City at the age of 77. Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi issued a decree posthumously awarding him the title of General of the Piaoqi Cavalry, Governor of Yizhou, and burial with honors at the Zhaoling Mausoleum. Although Cheng Yaojin made mistakes in his later years, he still lived a peaceful life and died a natural death.
