The Four Scholars of Sumen refer to four outstanding writers in the field of literature during the late Northern Song Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty, namely Huang Tingjian, Qin Guan, Zhang Lei, and Chao Buzhi. However, not all of the Four Scholars of Sumen were students of Su Shi. Although Su Shi was the most famous of the four writers, he was not the teacher of all of them. In fact, Su Shi did not personally teach all of his students, but only some of them made great progress under his guidance.
