Yang Yichen, originally surnamed Yu Chi, was a descendant of the Xianbei nationality from the Dai region. He was a famous general in the Sui Dynasty and the son of Yu Chi Chong, the Yi Tong General of the Northern Zhou Dynasty.

Yang Yichen's family background was quite impressive. His father, Yu Chi Chong, served in the Northern Zhou Dynasty as the Yi Tong General and led troops stationed in Hengshan. At that time, Yang Jian (later known as the Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty) appointed him as the General Manager of Dingzhou. Yu Chi Chong recognized Yang Jian's great talent and often interacted with him, and Yang Jian also treated him with great familiarity.

In the second year of the Daxiang era (580 AD), after Yang Jian became the chancellor of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Yu Chi Jou launched a rebellion. Because Yu Chi Chong had kinship ties with the rebels, he voluntarily imprisoned himself and sent emissaries to the capital to plead his case. Yang Jian wrote a letter to console him, allowed him to return to the court by carriage, and kept him close by his side. After Yang Jian ascended the throne, he awarded Yu Chi Chong the title of Qin Xing County Duke.

During that time, Yu Chi Yichen was still young and lived in the palace. Although he was not yet twenty years old, he served as a guard of the Qian Niu Wei for several years and received many rewards from Yang Jian. When Yang Jian casually mentioned some of his past friends, his gaze fell on Yu Chi Yichen, and he sighed deeply. Therefore, he issued an edict stating: "I have just ascended the throne, and the rebellion has not yet been pacified. Some people have wisdom and sufficient resolve. Yu Chi Yichen and Yu Chi Jou are kin to each other. Yu Chi Jou has launched a rebellion in Ye City, while his father, Yu Chi Chong, was in Changshan commanding his troops, adjacent to Yu Chi Jou and also closely related to him. He understands the principles of right and wrong, comprehends the righteousness of heaven and man, and has expressed his loyalty. Worried that he might be implicated in the rebellion, he voluntarily surrendered himself and requested to come to the chancellor's mansion. During the invasion of the Northern Di, he stood out, killed enemies, resisted, and died a martyr's death, demonstrating noble loyalty and righteousness. His integrity is reflected between life and death, and his deeds are praised throughout the world. Even if he is given high positions and generous salaries, and his descendants are granted official titles, it is still insufficient to fully commend his firm aspirations and noble character, which are as steadfast as pine and cypress trees. Therefore, I hereby grant the surname Yang to Yang Yichen, award him with 30,000 strings of coins, 30 hecaters of wine, and 100 hecaters of rice and wheat, and include him in the Yang family tree as my court grandson." Shortly after, Yang Yichen was appointed as the governor of Shaozhou.
