In the fourth year of Daxing (AD 434), Feng Hong sent envoys to the Northern Wei to request a reconciliation, but was rejected by Emperor Taiwu. In the same year, in the leap March, Feng Hong sent Shangshu Gao Yong to the Northern Wei to apologize and requested that his youngest daughter be made a concubine in the palace. Emperor Taiwu agreed and summoned Feng Wangren, his son, to serve in the court, but Feng Hong refused to accept. Liu Xun, a Sanqichangshi, advised Feng Hong to apologize to the Northern Wei and send his crown prince to serve in the court as a gesture of goodwill, but Feng Hong refused.
Liu Xun said, "Now the Wei Dynasty is stronger than the Jin Dynasty, and our Yan State is weaker than the Wu and Shu States. I hope that we can send the crown prince to the court on time to obey the commands of the great country. Then, we can collect the scattered soldiers and civilians, bestow deep favor on them, distribute grain from the granaries to relieve the people's hardships, and vigorously persuade them to engage in agriculture and silkworms to seek a bumper year. Only then can we hope that the great cause of our country can turn danger into safety, and the country can be permanently preserved."
However, Feng Hong did not listen and killed Liu Xun. Emperor Taiwu ordered Leping Wang Tuoba Pi and others to lead troops to attack, and the situation became increasingly tense and urgent, with everyone feeling deeply afraid. Yang Mi, the Taichang under Feng Hong, advised Feng Hong again to apologize to the Northern Wei and let Feng Wangren serve as a hostage. But Feng Hong refused and said he wanted to temporarily stay in Gaogouli in the east to plan for future actions. Yang Mi advised him not to do so because Gaogouli was a barbarian and could not be trusted, and even if Gaogouli was friendly with us at first, it might change in the end. Feng Hong did not listen and sent people to Gaogouli to request admission.
In the sixth year of Daxing (AD 436), Gaogouli sent generals Ge Lu and others to welcome Feng Hong. When Ge Lu and his men arrived at Helong City, they took off their rough clothes and gave Feng Hong's fine weapons and equipment to his subordinates. Feng Hong led the adult men and women in Helong City into Gaogouli.
In Liaodong, Gaogouli sent envoys to console Feng Hong and asked, "King Longcheng, must you have suffered a lot in the wilderness?" Feng Hong felt deeply ashamed and angry and answered the envoy as an emperor. Gaogouli placed Feng Hong in Pingguo and later moved him to Beifeng. Although Feng Hong had always looked down on Gaogouli, his political orders, criminal laws, rewards and punishments were maintained in the same way as when he was in his own country.
However, Gaogouli took away Feng Hong's attendants and detained Feng Wangren as a hostage. Feng Hong felt very angry and resentful about this and planned to escape to the south. Emperor Taiwu demanded Feng Hong again from Gaogouli, and Gaogouli killed Feng Hong and more than ten of his descendants at Beifeng.
Feng Hong's tragic ending also provides profound insights for future generations. Political ambition and personal selfishness often lead to the destruction of the country and the individual.
