In the winter of the fourth year of Jianxing (226 AD), after failing in his first northern Expedition, Zhu Geliang launched another one, targeting Chencang (now located east of Baoji City, Shaanxi Province). He took advantage of the opportunity when the Wei army was moving east and there were fewer troops in the Guanzhong region. He dispatched troops to Sanguan and attacked Chencang.
At Chencang, Zhu Geliang encountered a formidable opponent, Hao Zhao, a famous general of the Cao Wei dynasty. Hao Zhao was skilled in military strategy, particularly in defending cities. Zhu Geliang's tens of thousands of troops besieged Chencang, hoping to overwhelm it with their superior numbers. However, Hao Zhao only had over a thousand soldiers to defend the city.
Over the next 20 days, Zhu Geliang used various methods to attack the city, but failed to capture it. Eventually, he suffered a crushing defeat and had to withdraw his troops.
Although Zhu Geliang was respected as a military genius during the Three Kingdoms period, Hao Zhao was one of his toughest opponents. Hao Zhao's courage and wisdom were on full display as he faced Zhu Geliang's relentless attacks for over 20 days, despite being outnumbered. Even Simayi, once praised for his intelligence and bravery, had lost to Zhu Geliang several times and even dreaded going into battle due to Zhu Geliang's mockery.
Despite the heavy casualties, Hao Zhao ultimately defeated Zhu Geliang. The emperor of the Wei dynasty, Cao Rui, was delighted and ordered Hao Zhao to be awarded the title of "Liehou" and personally went to console him. However, Hao Zhao's joy turned to sorrow soon after as he fell seriously ill and died.
This battle once again demonstrated Zhu Geliang's military prowess, while also showcasing Hao Zhao's bravery and intelligence. This battle is an important historical event in the Three Kingdoms period and has significant influence on Chinese history and military development.
